The Rapid Adoption of Co-working Spaces in Asia

Co-working space has enjoyed tremendous growth in recent years, supported by the start-up boom. The Asia region has displayed a strong enthusiasm for shared workspaces and the region alone accounted for over one-third of all the available co-working spaces worldwide. According to CBRE, there are around 300 co-working spaces located in Asia Pacific cities including Hong Kong, Singapore, Shanghai, and Tokyo.

With the green trend taking hold in many countries, beautiful eco-friendly workspaces also have been popping up across Asia. Eastspring investments showed that Asia has seen a great increase in demand for green co-working spaces, with a growth rate of 150% over the last 3 years.

Singapore has seen a boom in green co-working space. O2Work, for example, features three-dimensional greenery and an ecosystem of plants. Nature and sustainability are the heart of their business. From the selection of building materials and furniture to the energy-efficient appliances and design layout, O2Work is dedicated to creating a clean, healthy workspace. SOHU indicated that O2Work’s occupancy rate has increased from 49% in February 2020 to 91% at the end of 2020. O2Work recently expanded and opened another 2 new co-working spaces, with an occupancy rate of 70%.

Meanwhile, CoCoon in Hong Kong incorporates sustainability in every aspect of its design. Bamboo flooring, low-energy LED lights, and drought-resistant plants make CoCoon’s space green and energy-efficient. The open and friendly space facilitates regular idea-sharing and brainstorming, encouraging members to engage with social responsibility and environmental entrepreneurship in their work.

Thus, the co-working sector has gained widespread acceptance and success in Asia. There is no doubt that co-working spaces will continue to see remarkable growth in the near future. In addition, due to growing awareness of environmental problems, Asia’s eco-friendly workspaces will soon become the norm rather than the exception. Green co-working spaces, as hubs of innovation and collaboration, are perfectly placed to pioneer innovative, eco-friendly solutions.
