Tech Giants are Taking China into the Smart Home Era

With the rapid development of IoT and artificial intelligence technology, smart-home business is favored by tech giants in China.

Beijing-based Xiaomi has not only built the world's third-largest smartphone brand in just a decade, it's also become the frontrunner in China's smart-home devices market. Xiaomi sells over 1,500 smart-home products on its website, most of which are cheaper than those available from major competitors. By offering a wide selection of affordable and relatively reliable products, Xiaomi has made itself competitive in Chinese smart-home market.

Meanwhile, Huawei recently debuted its smart-home project in the Mobile World Congress Shanghai 2021 event. The company showcased an area of 550 m2 in total, which included the installation of a living room, kitchen, study, home gym, entertainment room, and garage. The smart-home project includes products integrated with the Huawei ecosystem partners.

Smart-home combines technologies such as the Internet, computing, network communications, sensing, and control, and is considered the next blue ocean market. Market researchers think China's smart-home market is still at the primary stage of the current overall IoT market. Not yet mature, but it is beyond reproach that smart-home is one of the fastest-growing markets in China. Jimi IoT estimated that the value of Chinese smart-home market in 2022 may exceed USD 25 billion, accounting for 25% of the global smart-home market share.

Smart-home is powered by IoT, but the scope of smart-home is not just limited to home entertainment and home control. Traditional industries like energy, health care, security, and education are gradually integrated with smart-home applications, such as security systems and temperature and humidity control.
